Seventeen-year-old Penelope (Pen) has lost everything—her home, her parents, and her ten-year-old brother. Like a female Odysseus in search of home, she navigates a dark world full of strange creatures, gathers companions and loses them, finds love and loses it, and faces her mortal enemy.
In her signature style, Francesca Lia Block has created a world that is beautiful in its destruction and as frightening as it is lovely. At the helm is Pen, a strong heroine who holds hope and love in her hands and refuses to be defeated.

Besides the fact that the title of this books sounds very similar to “Love in the Time of Cholera” (which I both love and loath) I am a huge fan of Francesca Lia Block…who I was first introduced to through her Weetzie Bat series (and then later “The Rose and the Beast” which is a retelling of classic fairytales.) Her writing is (admittedly) not for everyone. She’s is a love/hate author, but there is just something about the darkness of her writing that grabs hold and doesn’t let go. And speaking of dark…boy does this book sound like it is raining misery and misfortune. Not to sound all Debbie Downer on you, but I want to see how Francesca manages to save her protagonist, who… is obviously facing some pretty serious abandonment issues (and creatures, we can’t forget the creatures.) Add to that a STUNNING cover, and this one tops my “Waiting” list.
What are YOU waiting for?
Such a beautiful cover…and I think of “Love in the Time of Cholera” every time I see this one too. I’ve not read a book from Block yet—but I would really love to.

I haven’t seen this one around very much! I love the title though – the environmental engineer in me is interested! And I love The Odyssey. I hope you enjoy this one when you get to read it! 🙂

Yeah, I’m one of those who doesn’t love her writing, haha. But still, this one sounds intriguing, so I hope you like it!

I’ve never read anything by her, she’s not really a “me” author but this does sound interesting. And the cover’s great!
